The Great Music Debate

Wed Nov 11, 2009, 4:51 AM
Hi,

How do you listen to music?

I grew up in a time when I had to go to a record shop and buy an LP (vinyl), then take it home and play it on a turntable. I loved the quality of product I got for my money. If you've never purchased, (or even seen) an LP record, it's impossible for you to appreciate its beauty. The artwork alone on record sleeves could be breathtaking, and it added so much more to the music contained inside. Played through a high quality audio system, the sound quality is incredible.

In the early 1970's I bought loads of LPs - mostly Jazz, but over the years I've lost all those great albums. I used to own an extensive collection of Buddy Rich records but only a few are left.

When CDs came along, it took me a while to buy into this new medium. The actual product was much smaller, and gone were the wonderfully artistic album sleeves. However, as digital audio technology improved, these "compact discs" quickly gained favour. CDs sounded crystal clear, and there was no more of the crackling you got from LPs. However, there is a debate that this sound is just too perfect - making the music feel harsh compared to the earthy quality and more organic sound of vinyl.

The arrival of the Internet has changed the way people listen to music. Nowadays, you can download music in a heavily compressed form as an MP3 file. Once downloaded, you can listen to these audio files on a whole range of portable equipment. Even although I do have an MP3 player, I still prefer to listen to music from an LP or CD on a decent hi-fi system.

I've created a poll to see how you listen to your music. :)

Take care,
Yan

"STREET" is great fun, but it's NOT pics of empty streets, your feet on the pavement, graffiti, traffic lights, ten poses of your girlfriend, or buildings without people. More info --> [link]
